Day 1: Overview of Construction Safety

  • Introduction to Construction Safety:
    • Importance of safety in construction.
    • Common hazards in construction sites.
  • Legal Framework:
    • Overview of the OSHA 2007 Kenya Act.
    • Employer and employee duties under the Act.
  • Regulatory Bodies:
    • Roles of DOSHS (Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services).
    • Enforcement and penalties.

Day 2: OSHA 2007 Kenya Act – General Provisions

  • Workplace Safety Requirements:
    • Risk assessment and safety planning.
    • Maintaining workplace safety records.
  • Health and Welfare:
    • Sanitation and welfare facilities at construction sites.
    • Provisions for workers’ health under the OSHA Act.
  • Workplace Registration and Site Notification:
    • Legal requirements for workplace registration under OSHA 2007.
    • Process of registering a workplace with DOSHS.
    • Notification requirements for construction sites.
    • Key information and timelines for site notifications.

Day 3: Subsidiary Legislation – Part 1

  • First Aid Rules:
    • Requirements for first aid provision at construction sites.
    • First aid training and equipment.
  • Fire Risk Reduction Rules:
    • Fire prevention measures on-site.
    • Emergency response planning and fire drills.
    • Firefighting equipment maintenance.

Day 4: Subsidiary Legislation – Part 2

  • Health and Safety Committee Rules:
    • Formation and roles of safety committees.
    • Effective communication and safety training.
  • Construction-Specific Regulations:
    • Scaffolding, fall protection, and safe use of machinery.
    • Hazardous substances management.
  • Workshop:
    • Developing a safety plan for a sample construction project.

Day 5: Practical Applications and Assessment

  • Site-Specific Safety Plans:
    • Customizing safety plans for different construction projects.
    • Integrating environmental considerations with safety.
  • Safety Audits and Reporting:
    • Conducting internal safety audits.
    • Incident investigation and reporting.
  • Assessment:
    • Written exam covering OSHA 2007 and subsidiary rules.
    • Group presentations on mock safety plans.
