Introduction

This training provides participants with practical skills to design, deploy, and manage mobile data collection systems using KoboToolbox for humanitarian, development, research, and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) projects. The course emphasizes digital data collection workflows, data quality assurance, ethical data management, and real-time reporting to support evidence-based decision-making.

Participants will gain hands-on experience building forms, collecting data using mobile devices, managing submissions, and exporting data for analysis while aligning with donor data protection and accountability frameworks.

Day 1: Introduction to Mobile Data Collection & KoboToolbox

Day 2: Designing Data Collection Forms

  • Survey design principles and question types
  • Using Kobo form builder and XLSForm basics
  • Skip logic, constraints, and validation rules
  • Metadata capture (GPS, date, enumerator ID)
  • Practical exercise: building a complete digital questionnaire

 

Day 3: Field Deployment & Data Collection

  • Configuring mobile devices for data collection
  • Offline and online data collection workflows
  • Managing enumerators and user roles
  • Field testing, piloting, and troubleshooting
  • Practical exercise: live data collection simulation

 

Day 4: Data Management, Quality Assurance & Ethics

  • Monitoring submissions and data completeness
  • Data cleaning, validation, and version control
  • Managing sensitive data and access controls
  • Data protection, privacy, and informed consent

Day 5: Data Analysis, Reporting & Integration
